March 18 2007 Demonstration

13,000 people rallied in Portland Oregon on Sunday to demand an end to the illegal war and occupation in Iraq. Several members of Willamette Reds made the journey from Salem.

Two members of WR who are involved in Palestine Childrens Welfare Fund, a co-sponsor of the rally, set up an informational table. Kuffiyahs and pins were quickly purchased and posters, cards, and other informational literature were popular too. Interest in and understanding of the issues of the liberation of Palestine from the illegal occupation by Israel is growing. Other middle east solidarity groups were well represented.

Much of the march had a tone that was more solemn than previous rallies. What seemed missing was a strong voice from socialists and communists. We want peace, but how?

A group of high school age kids marching together chanted "Hands are for holding, not for guns!" holding hands together raised high. A group of anarchist kids didn't want to leave downtown; Oregon State Police were out with at least two large trucks filled with men in black riot gear, shields, and helmets. There were more cameras clicking at the police line up than there were police. Safety first = bring your camera?
