From The Solidarity Education Center:
Re-visit one of the great American Labor Struggles of the 1990’s
Staley: The Fight For A New American Labor Movement is the story of one of the most contested labor conflicts in the 1990’s. The 3 year-long struggle of the valiant workers at the A. E. Staley plant in Decatur, Illinois captured the attention and support of other unions and workers throughout America and around the world. The authors, Steven Ashby & C.J. Hawking, were both deeply engaged in support work for the Staley workers throughout the struggle and bring first-hand knowledge of much of what was happening at several levels of the conflict. They have meticulously researched and conducted numerous interviews to bring forward this dynamic account of what went on in full view and behind the scenes. Throughout the book, the main voices being heard are those of the Staley workers who were transformed into a disciplined, collective force for justice and who reached far beyond the aptly named “War Zone” of the conflicts location. Their's is a story that had to be told.
Staley: The Fight For A New American Labor Movement is published by the University of Illinois Press. The basic ordering information is provided below. Also check: www.staleybook.org.
