A student from Oregon, Eduardo Jose Cervantes (who goes by Jose), is back home from his first year studying medicine in Cuba. We received this information about Jose from Juanita Rodriguez, a friend of Eduardo's.
Jose struggled for more than a year to take the classes at Oregon State University he would need to qualify for the scholarship to study medicine and fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor. Working 20 plus hours per week to make enough money to pay the rent and gas, let alone eat, and still have adequate time to study and do homework, he often felt defeated, and wondered if it was all worth it.
He had to borrow money to go to San Diego for the first interview, then more for the obligatory meeting in NYC, before he finally got the call on July 25, 2008 that he had been accepted and would receive a FULL scholarship to study medicine in Cuba. He would be going to the Latin American School of Medicine, the world's largest medical school, where the Cuban government offers free education to more than 7,000 students from more than 25 different countries.
After such a long and arduous struggle, it seemed unbelievable. Now Jose is back in Corvallis, Oregon, after completing his first year of study at LASM. He is resting, reconnecting with family and friends, and looking for a little work to raise some money to pay for necessary books before he returns in September. He is ready to share his story with all who are interested in his experiences this past year.
He will make three presentations in Corvallis:
Monday, August 17, Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center 7 t0 9 PM (Spanish only);
Tuesday, August 18, Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center, 7 to 9 PM (English);
Thursday, August 20, Fireworks Restaurant, 12:30 - 2 PM.
