From the AFL-CIO:
All across the country, a small group of radical right-wingers are intent on disrupting congressional town hall meetings in an all-out effort to stop real health care reform. We need your help now to make sure our voices are heard over the unruly mob.
Your member of Congress, Rep. Kurt Schrader, is holding three town hall meetings this week, and we need you to attend, along with your friends, family and co-workers if possible. Please help counteract the right-wing fringe opponents of health care reform, aka the mob, who according to their internal planning documents are planning to "stand up and shout and sit right back down" and "yell out and challenge the Rep's statements early" in an attempt to "rattle" them and disrupt the meeting.
More than 75 percent of America's workers support President Obama's plan for real health care reform, and we cannot allow a small band of angry zealots to disrupt these meetings and stop reform.
Here are the details on your local meetings:
Town Hall Topic: Congress on Your Corner
When: Thursday, August 6, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Where: The Spouting Horn Restaurant, 110 E Highway 101, Depoe Bay, OR 97341
Town Hall Topic: Congress on Your Corner
When: Thursday, August 6, 12-1 p.m.
Where: Pelican Pub and Brewery, 33180 Cape Kiwanda Drive, Pacific City, OR 97112
Town Hall Topic: Congress on Your Corner
When: Friday, August 7, 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Where: The Red Door Cafe, 34 South Coast Highway, Newport, OR 97365
After your meetings, please e-mail us at peoplepower@aflcio.org with information on what happened. If you have a chance to speak with your member of Congress, below are a few talking points you might find helpful. But personal stories are often the most powerful way to communicate the need for reform, so feel free to tell your own story.
Will you side with health insurers and vote for legislation that continues their control over health care in America, or vote for reform that puts patients and their doctors in charge of their health care?
I want health care reform that:
Puts people and their doctors in charge of their own health care.
Reduces health care costs.
Outlaws insurance company abuses.
Gives doctors better decision-making tools for care.
Requires insurers to compete with a quality public health insurance option to keep them honest and hold down costs.
Requires companies to pay their fair share toward health care costs.
Does not tax the health insurance benefits we already have.
Thank you for your support,
Marc Laitin
AFL-CIO Online Mobilization Coordinator
P.S. We are going to win this fight, but we can't do it without hard work. The Republicans and their corporate allies are going all out to stop reform, and the next 30 days are going to be critical. Even if you can't make this meeting, forward this e-mail to your family and friends who live nearby and urge them to attend.
