It feels as if these manufactured disruptions by the far-right are a kind of prolonged coup attempt aimed at destabilizing society, silencing the opposition, giving right-wingers their power fix and sending a message that they're dangerous and a force to be reckoned with. Remember that a wing of this movement has caused a spike in gun sales and has taken some lives over the last 10 months.
Here is an unedited account from Madras of what the right-wing looks like:
I went to the Sen. Merkley town hall meeting in Madras this afternoon. You've seen the clips of the Birthers totally destroying some poor Congressman's meeting back east? Well, right-wingers/evangelicals tried it at Merkley's meeting. The place was packed -- maybe 300 people. And when the meeting got going it was clear they had one agenda -- to disrupt the meeting as much as possible.
They wanted to talk about immigration (seal the borders, shoot them as they come across), health care (euthanasia for old people -- isn't this fascism?, why do illegal immigrants get health care?). They booed loudly questions about global warming (chanted "drill, baby, drill"), alternative energy (just drill), and ending the wars. "I'm a good Christian, and I'm not going to allow this in my country." These people are crazed, and they're here in Central Oregon!
Merkley did an excellent job of handling them and keeping them toned down. Apparently most of the town meetings he has held are this way. As Rachel Maddow pointed out, there is a letter from the Tea Party instigating organization urging a nationally organized effort to prevent members of Congress from getting their message out on health care or hearing what their rational constituents think. It is working! The tragedy was there where so many of them at the meeting, and so few
rational people.
Our nation is at risk! Thinking people must go to these meetings! The radicals may be few, but they are loud and noisy, and totally immune to reasoned discussions or facts. One lady spent nearly 10 minutes quoting 2 to 4 word snippets out of the current house bill to prove it required rationing health care, euthanizing old people, and providing health care to illegal immigrants. Merkley pointed out at the end of her diatribe that he had read the bill, and the bill does not say what she has been led to believe it says if you actually read whole sentences or paragraphs.
THESE PEOPLE ARE DERANGED AND IRRATIONAL, BUT UTTERLY RUDE AND RUTHLESS. WE MUST FIGHT THIS OR WE WILL LOSE OUR COUNTRY.

yeah, that seems to be the same as the meeting in Dallas, as far as the quotes the Stateman Journal presented. and, as you know, the letters to the editor are just as ignorant and lacking in fact. i agree, we should attend these meetings if we can. it's hard when your opposition has apocalyptic intentions.
Bill Moyers discussed this right-wing madness and the folks that are whipping it up a few weeks ago. It was, as usual, a fantastic show. here is the link: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/07242009/watch2.html
It's called "Rage on the Airwaves"
