Veterans and activists marked June 8th, the 44th anniversary of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty by holding visibility actions in Portland and Eugene, holding signs and distrbuting handouts while urging passersby to call their US Senators and Congresspeople to demand a re-opening of the case and a suspension of US aid to Israel. Our visibilities were viewed by several thousand people. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and one of shock for many who have never heard about the attack.
The flyer that was distributed is reprinted below with contact information for Oregon's Congressional delegation. Please take a moment to call your Senators and Congressperson. Let them know in no uncertain terms that support for Israel is an affront to the memory of the USS Liberty vicitims and their families.

JUSTICE FOR USS LIBERTY VETS
On June 8th, 1967, the USS Liberty was attacked by Israel off the coast of Egypt. 34 US servicemen were killed and 172 were wounded in this well documented unprovoked attack. The deliberate nature of the attack was covered up by the Johnson administration. Israel and its supporters continue to deny the attack was deliberate.
According to the ‘Independent Commission of Inquiry into the Attack on the USS Liberty’, this air and naval attack lasted 2 hours “during which time unmarked Israeli aircraft dropped napalm canisters on the Liberty’s bridge, and fired 30mm cannons and rockets, causing 821 holes, more than 100 of which were rocket size; survivors estimate 30 or more sorties were flown over the ship by a minimum of 12 attacking Israeli planes which were jamming all 5 American emergency radio channels.” This ‘accident’ happened after 8 hours of aerial surveillance on the Liberty, which had unmistakable American markings.
Israel has never been held accountable for this murderous attack on the Liberty, yet Israel receives billions in US tax dollars every year, which subsidizes Israel’s continuing ethnic cleansing of occupied Palestinian territories. Few politicians, whether Democratic or Republican, have been willing to speak out and take on the Israel Lobby. And they won’t, unless we make them do so.
Call or write your US Representatives & Senators. Tell them to stand up to the Israel Lobby, demand an official investigation into the attack & US government cover-up, and tell them to demand a suspension of US aid to Israel pending a full and objective investigation free from foreign influence and free from interference of special interests.
