From US Labor Against the War:
This evening, the Senate will take up the American Jobs Act.
Every Senator needs to hear that his/her constituents need jobs and protection from joblessness.
Please call TODAY (Tuesday, October 11)!
Use this toll-free number 1-888-245-0215
(you'll be connected to the U.S. Capitol Switchboard - tell them which Senator you want and they'll put you through; call back a second time to reach your other Senator)
Here's a short message: "My name is ___ and I'm a constituent. Please tell Senator ____ to vote FOR S. 1660, the American Jobs Act without delay. It will help millions of low-income workers with jobs and unemployment protections and helps communities with job-creating investments in education and infrastructure. The small increase in taxes for millionaires is fair. NO is not an answer with unemployment stuck at over 9 percent."
(Even shorter - just say vote FOR the American Jobs Act without delay. If you can get out the rest, so much the better.)
Why call today? Senators, whether they support or oppose jobs funding right now, need to hear that their constituents care about this. They are starting to hear this -through town meetings, calls and letters. They know people are angry and fearful. Your help is needed to add to this, and especially to connect the concern about jobs to solutions that target aid to low-income people and communities. Federal unemployment insurance will EXPIRE in December if Congress does not extend it. Senators need to hear now that cutting off millions of long-term unemployed people after 26 weeks or less is absolutely unacceptable.
Human needs advocates: the President's plan now before the Senate includes subsidized jobs (like the successful TANF Emergency Fund program that was allowed to expire), summer and year-round jobs for low-income youth, other job training for low-income people, funding to hire teachers in early childhood education as well as K-12, funding to rebuild foreclosed and blighted properties in low-income communities, and targeted help for long-term jobless and veterans. PLEASE CALL TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!
