Upcoming Protests In Portland

Wednesday June 13th, 8 am, Bus Riders Unite, Rally for the Bus! June 13th Tri-Met HQ, 4012 SE 17th Hotlist Mobilization OPAL Environmental Justice is leading a campaign to get the Tri Met Board to adopt an alternative budget and stop fare hikes and cuts to Tri-Met service. We will rally outside Tri Met headquarters and march to the Tri-Met Board meeting, 9 am, 3717 SE 17th. At the Board meeting, transit riders and supporters will have a chance to testify about the impact of the proposed cuts. Tuesday June 12th there will be a strategy session and preparation meeting from 5 to 8 pm at the OPAL office, 2407 SE 49th.

Friday, June 15th, 12:30 pm, Justice for Janitors Day, Terry Schrunk Plaza, SW 3rd and Madison, Full Mobilization! For 19 years Justice for Janitors Day has been celebrated nationally on June 15th. This year over 1,700 Janitors are negotiating their contract with eleven different contractors for one master agreement.

SEIU 49’s union contract has kept many janitors out of poverty providing them affordable health care, security in their job, and a living wage. Our hope is that this year we will be able to sustain those benefits including health care for their children, win increased wages for workers who make between $20,000 and $28,000 per year, and secure paid sick days so no more janitors will have to go to work sick.

Monday, July 2nd, Noon, Trans Pacific Partnership Action Pioneer Courthouse Square. This is part of a national day of action. In Portland, activists will be meeting at noon on July 2nd — the opening day of negotiations — at Pioneer Courthouse Square. After a brief update about the work of our allies in San Diego and across the country, we'll then march and caravan together to local branches of three of the big corporations that have been pushing the TPP: Verizon, FedEx and Wal-Mart. These corporations are among the approximately 600 that have been granted special "cleared advisor" status to review, comment upon and draft proposed TPP text, while ordinary Americans have been barred from even seeing what's been proposed in our names. See below for more information and a link to contact Congress about the TPP.

Students in Quebec have been protesting the austerity policies and increases in tuition there for 100 days. The government has decided to crack down on their right to protest and the protest is spreading. There is a solidarity action on Monday June 11th at 7:00 pm at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Bring a pot or pan to bang on and show your solidarity. http://www.facebook.com/events/124320451038851
