Urgent! Political Prisoner Lynne Stewart Needs Your Support

Lynne's breast cancer has returned.  The cancer she was successfully treated for two years ago has returned.  According to her husband, Ralph Poynter and her daughter who is a doctor it is very treatable if prison officials will let her return to the New York hospital where she had received treatment in the past.  She has been denied her request.

Lynne, a prominent civil rights attorney for 30 years, was the victim of a government-orchestrated 2005 frame up trial.  She was convicted on five counts of conspiracy to aid and abet terrorism.  This is based on the government's charge that her public issuance of a press release on behalf of her client, the "blind sheik" Omar Abdel Rachman, an Egyptian Cleric who was framed and imprisoned for life on "terrorism" charges, was illegal.

Lynne, 72, was originally convicted and sentenced to 28 months in prison, but this was considered "too light" by the reactionary U.S. Court Of Appeals For The Second Circuit and her sentence was outrageously increased to 10 years, by Federal District Court trial judge, John Koetl.

This conviction was a message to all attorneys that defense of the unpopular, defense of democratic rights and especially defense of Muslim victims is dangerous.  In her trial Lynne defends her right to give her client the best possible defense.

When she was re-sentenced to ten years, one of the reasons was that she "showed no remorse".  She does not feel remorse for defending the Bill Of Rights and says we should defend all political prisoners.

You can write Lynne:

You do not have to write to the prison authorities about her situation.  They read everything we send and tell her so.
She currently has a request for the Supreme Court to hear her case.
