If possession is nine-tenths of the law, Patricia Williams and Darren Johnson are almost completely back in control of their Southeast Portland home.
The community successfully moved Patricia and Darren back into their
home after a forceful eviction in November of 2012. Later that month,
community members reclaimed the home from the mortgage company Steel
Capital Steel through the direct action of six people and the support of
dozens that brought food and supplies, made signs, and stood in defense
against police forces.
The police came to the home with the intention of removing people from
the home by prying open the front door as hundreds of supporters
gathered at City Hall to demand that Patricia and Darren be left in
their home. As they were breaking down the door, the police received a
call that they were not to remove anyone because the ownership of the
property was in dispute. The police left the scene, and Patricia
and Darren have been living in their home ever since. The fight is not
over, but this is a huge victory - and the housing justice community
made it happen!
Patricia says it best, "The community is the reason that we are still in our home." (Read the full story now)
