Description: "Salt of this Sea" is the passionate
story of Brooklyn-born Soraya, who travels to Israel in search of her
grandparent's home, land, bank account, and the life they knew before
they were expelled in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel--a
family history riddled with mystery and sorrow.
Soraya experiences the airport "welcome" that many visitors with Arab
names and histories find disconcerting and dehumanizing. Some are even
denied entry due to their ethnicity or their history of activism.
Soraya locates her grandparent's old house, but also finds love and a surprising self-discovery.
Directed by Annemarie Jacir; awarded the Cannes International Film
Festival's Official Selection of 2008 award. "Sea" was Palestine's
submission to the 81st Academy Awards as Best Foreign Film. It was
awarded Best Film by the Sguardi Altrove Film Festival, Italy 2009.
"It's brilliant, emotional, intense and fresh... one of the best films I've seen in years," said Michael Moore.
Discussion and light refreshments will follow the film. Suggested
donation is $6 ormore, to benefit Middle East Children's Alliance,
providing clean water for the children of Gaza. See www.mecaforpeace.org.
