Salem & Portland Mobilizations In April & May

Full Mobilization for April:

Thursday April 11, 2013, 6.00pm - 9.30pm.   Portland Community Budget Hearing.  Montgomery Park, 2701 NW Vaughn Street.  This is the third of four hearings, where we can tell the City Council what is important to our communities.  Speak out against cuts to city services and layoffs!  Hearing starts at 6.30.  Come at 6.00pm to sign up for testimonials and/or to show a presence as community members arrive.

Full Mobilization for May:

Wednesday May 1,  Gather at 2pm, Rally at 3pm, March at 4pm.  International Workers Day.  O’Bryant Square, between SW Stark, SW Washington and SW 9th.  No Human Being is Illegal! People Over Profits!

Upcoming Actions:

Wednesday April 17th,  noon – 1pm.  Save Salem’s Mail!  Salem Main Post Office, 1050 25th St SE.  Salem’s Mail Distribution Plant is scheduled for closure by June.

Wednesday May 8th.  Lobby Day for Mother’s Day.  State Capitol.  Tell our legislators what all of us already know: we need better workplace and public policies that support our hard work to provide and care for our families.  For more information: http://www.familyforwardoregon.org.

Saturday May 11th, 12 noon – 2pm.  Mother’s Day Vigil for compassionate immigration reform.  Ice Detention Center, 1623 East ‘J’ St, Tacoma, WA.  Carpooling at 9am from Ascension Catholic Church, 7507 SE Yamhill.  For more information contact the Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (formerly (ONSM) at 503-550-3510.

Saturday May 11th, 1pm.  People’s Assembly on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.  First Unitarian Church, 1034 SW 13th Ave.  On International Fair Trade Day we organize to dismantle the TPP!

Other Events:
Saturday April 13th, 6pm to midnight.  Inner City Blues Festival.  Melody Ballroom, 615 SE Alder.  The Norman Sylvester Band and a host of other performers in this fundraiser for Health Care for All Oregon.  $15

Thursday April 18th, 6.30pm – 8.30pm.  Broken On All Sides: Race, Mass Incarceration and New Visions for Criminal Justice in the US.
  Portland Association of Teachers Union Hall, 345 NE 8th Ave.  A film screening followed by discussion.  Popcorn and soda provided!

Thursday May 23rd, 5.30pm  – 7.30pm.  This Is Our Movement.  Hilton Hotel, 301 W 6th St, Vancouver WA.  A panel event organized by the AFGE on the history and current crucial importance of the labor movement.  Aimed at students and young workers but all are welcome!  Social event from 8pm.

Bill Fletcher, well-known social movement theorist and activist, will be speaking at the Red Lion Inn on Market St in Salem at 1.30pm on Sunday May 19th and at The Hilton Hotel in Vancouver WA at 5.30pm on Tuesday May 21st.
