June 30-July 14, 2013: Literacy Brigade

Since 2009, when El Salvador’s first leftist government was elected, there has been a dramatic re-orientation of national priorities to meet the needs of poor and working-class families, whose needs have been historically marginalized – these efforts have been especially strong in the area of education. The Ministry of Education has an incredible goal of eliminating illiteracy in El Salvador with the help of tens of thousands of volunteer youth and are calling for international solidarity from North Americans and the Salvadoran community in the US to spread the word internationally and domestically to promote this government  program of “love and solidarity.” Last summer, CISPES sent the very first international volunteer brigade to support this incredible government program. Read about this historic first brigade here!

Cost: $800 + $150-300 sliding scale registration fee + Airfare
Conversational proficiency in Spanish is required.
Download an Informational Sheet, Flyer, and Application. (Application deadline is May 15th)
Partial scholarships are available. Scholarship application deadline is May 1st.
